Commissioned by talented baritone David Walters for his senior recital, Life of a Tree is a short song for baritone and piano based on a beautifully composed poem by Adam Kazimierz Jakubowski. The poem depicts the seasons of life for a tree and how its existence is affected, tested, and renewed by the outside world. The lush text echoes the story and experience of humanity, and the music is designed to reflect and amplify the philosophical message. Composed in a world of minimalism and neo-romanctic harmonies, this work features influences of the songs of Barber and Brahms, and is an exploration on the beauties of the baritone voice.
