Description

This contemplative and stirring piece for piano was written in dedication to the birth of my daughter, Leah, in 2025. While positive and joyous in some respects, this work is mostly hopeful, reflective, and restrained to represent an uncertain yearning for a better world and a brighter future. Beginning with a simplistic but hazy motif, the fresh but somewhat dark harmonies paint a moody but hopeful picture. Our short melody is restated with expanded texture, leading to a B section with more direct expression and movement. The C section takes our B motive and intensifies with bubbling imitation leading to a grand statement of the B melody as the work’s emotional core is finally unleashed. A final shadowy iteration of the A melody initiates a question that finds its satisfying answer in a lush major chord before concluding with short statements from both our B and A themes.
