Description

Composed in the summer of 2016, Shine is a compelling and robust prelude for organ commissioned by the esteemed organist Jillian Gardner. Utilizing perpetual motion and a series of energetic ostinato patterns, this work explores some uncharted territory in comparison with standard organ repertoire. For example, the complex 6/16 + 5/16 time signature provides for a resilient groove with unrelenting energy, which is driven by a rapid sixteenth-note accompaniment and shared between all staves, including the pedals. The frequent stop changes intended to transform the aural atmosphere also demonstrate a modern perspective on compositional technique, as well as showcase a virtuosic level of musical and logistical proficiency from the performer. A diverse harmonic vocabulary is utilized throughout the work and allows for an colorful combination of both horizontal and vertical complexity, which both reach their climactic potential in a vibrant E-flat major presentation of the secondary theme just before the work’s powerful conclusion. Dedicated to my brother and personal favorite organist Joel Tucker, this prelude is intended to evoke his compassionate spirit and beautiful personality, which shines everywhere he goes.
