Description

Jordan R Tucker’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano was commissioned by Daniel Gerona during the summer of 2014 while Daniel and Jordan were students together at Baylor University. Being close friends with Daniel, Jordan composed this work based on characteristics of their friendship; confidence, energy, creativity, zeal, sympathy, motivation, and loyalty. This first movement features the energy and spontaneity of their interactions. This second movement represents their moments of sorrow and sympathy for each other. It begins three-note figure that is based on Daniel’s initials D-C-G. This difficult work emphasizes the versatility of the trumpet and the endurance of the performer; it also features a prominent and complex piano part, creating an overall congruency between the trumpet player and accompanist. Though difficult, this is a highly rewarding work with many moments of beauty, excitement, and sheer joy. The third movement depicts their shared passion for music, particularly jazz music. The energetic third movement is based on the jazz music of their favorite artists and contains a constantly shifting tonal center. This difficult work emphasizes the versatility of the trumpet and the endurance of the performer; it also features a prominent and complex piano part, creating an overall congruency between the trumpet player and accompanist. Though difficult, this is a highly rewarding work with many moments of beauty, excitement, and sheer joy.
